Business Studies

Business incorporates a dynamic range of subjects which prepare students for the challenges of adult life by introducing them to industry and the working world.

Whether students want to be an entrepreneur, a successful employee, a driven manager for a thriving company, or just want an insight into how businesses work, business education gives a powerful start to launch into various career paths. Students studying business education courses will not only gain knowledge and business acumen, but will also experience lessons based on business concepts, with professionalism, independence and productivity as our driving forces. The courses offered emphasise the ever-changing nature of business, the challenge and creativity of enterprise and the reliance of businesses on effective communication.

Cambridge Nationals Level 2 Business Studies (Year 11)

The Cambridge Nationals in Business and Enterprise offer students a broad foundation of knowledge required for further study in business, including the different ways in which businesses are owned and operated, effective recruitment and employment, and the key phrases/elements of successful business and enterprise activities.

Students will explore different types of business and understand why objectives are so important, which core functions are needed in business and how external factors may impact the running of businesses.  Students will also gain an insight into the recruitment process and help them plan for their own career.

Students will complete a total of 3 mandatory units of work, 1 of these is an external examination.

These are:

  • Unit R061- Different types of Business. This unit contains a written examination paper which is set and marked by OCR
  • Units R062- Planning for Work. This unit is a controlled assessment, which will be internally moderated by staff at St Mary’s and then externally moderated by the exam board.
  • R063-Setting up and running an Enterprise. This unit is a controlled assessment, which will be internally moderated by staff at St Mary’s and then externally moderated by the exam board

Units are graded Pass (grade C), Merit (grade B) or Distinction (grade A) with a new grading of Distinction* to aspire students to achieve at a higher level.

BTEC Level 2 First Award in Business (Year 10)

The Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Business is taught over 120 guided learning hours (GLH). It has core and optional specialist units.

Learners must complete the two core units, and a choice of optional units to reach a total of 120 GLH.

This BTEC First Award has units that your teacher assesses (internal) and a unit that Pearson sets and marks (external)

Course Content

With the new BTEC Tech Award in Enterprise, students can explore what it means to set up and run a business enterprise, as well as develop key skills and discover potential careers.
As the BTEC Tech Award in Enterprise is a practical introduction to life and work as an entrepreneur, students will:

delve deeper into how the sector works
appreciate the importance of business planning and understanding the market
analyse and evaluate the skills they develop
