On Friday 8th November a group of Year 13 A Level Biology and BTEC Applied Science students visited the Doctor’s Laboratory at the Halo Building in London. Students went on a tour of the lab, visiting different departments such as Blood Sciences, Immunology and Infectious Diseases. Students had the opportunity to meet the Scientists at work, look at real patient samples and ask any questions they had. They were also told about exciting opportunities for Degree Apprenticeships.

After a spot of lunch students visited the Wellcome collection, a museum connecting Science, medicine, life and art. The students spent some time looking at the exhibits and asking their tour guide any questions they had. A great day was had by all.

As part of the Business Level 3 course, the students are required to plan and deliver an event in school. The group of students, Jayde, Olivia, Destiny and Tallie, decided they wanted to plan an event that would entertain our staff as a thank you for all the hard work they undertake for the students.

They decided to plan and deliver ‘St Mary’s Quiz night’. The students put together a quiz of several rounds, planned the itinerary of the evening to ensure it was fun and ran smoothly, promoted, and hosted the evening. What started quite daunting for them, turned out to be an invaluable experience and a great insight into what it takes to be an event manager. The money they raised that evening will be going to the school supported charity. The were able to raise £70 to go to Haven House Children’s Hospice.  All staff that attended were truly dazzled with the event and the way the young ladies carried themselves. Even the losers had fun saying what an enjoyable evening it was, and requested an encore!

The group of young ladies did incredibly well, leaving staff impressed in what they had achieved. A big congratulations to them all for their achievements and completing the project with excellence.

On Thursday 2 May our Year 13 students attended a Leaver’s Tea as they are now going on study leave and have their final public examinations starting.  It was a lovely celebration of their time at St Mary’s and all who attended, students and staff alike, enjoyed the social gathering before the serious work of Exams gets going!

We wish them every success this summer, and look forward to hearing about their future endeavours.
