Congratulations to the Year 8 Girls football team who finished 3rd in the District 6-A-Side football competition at Haileybury Turnford School.

The standard of football played in the competition was exceptional with the St Mary’s team putting in some excellent, hard fought performances to secure 3rd place.

Well done to all the team, a fantastic achievement; Khiera, Kayla, Zaynep, Ruby, Amy, Itohan and Michaela and thank you to Chelsea for her brilliant support and encouragement.

The Year 8 Textiles students have been designing and making their own drawstring bags based on a zoo theme. They have learnt what a pattern piece is, the importance of seam allowance in products and inserted the drawstring into their bags.

They have done some excellent work and we wanted to share this with you.

Here is just a small sample of the Year 8 drawstring bags students have made in their textiles lessons.

Students were given a design brief and specification asking them to design and make a zoo themed drawstring bag, which included two decorative textiles techniques, a fastening and be made from natural fabric.

They developed their skills on the sewing machine and learnt what a seam allowance is and why it is important in textiles products.

On Thursday 1st February, the Year 8 netball team played their second fixture, against Simon Balle School.

The girls started the game well, scoring a goal within the first 3 minutes. Simon Balle made a strong comeback, and despite some excellent defending from Myleene and Isabella, managed to score 2 goals before the end of the first quarter. Throughout the game St Mary’s worked really hard as a team to get the ball up the court and remain in possession. There was some excellent work on the middle of the court from Maria, Sienna, Ana and Jessica, as well as some great shooting from Shumaila and Sofia.

Unfortunately, Simon Balle came away with the win (5-3) but the girls played incredibly well and held their own in what was a very close, competitive game. Well done to everyone who took part, especially the player of the match, Sofia.

Our Year 8 artists have started their new project on ‘Natural Forms,’ in art and the world around us. They will be exploring 2D art, digital art and printing this term. Here is Ozan, Hannah and Ruby’s sketchbooks as an example of student’s mastering their skills and processes.
